(Thanks to the Rotten Tomatoes)
I Am Legend is a good movie because it is a horror movie made without the conventional scary music, and for a zombie movie, the zombies look more human than ever.
Will Smith is the doctor who will not leave New York until he finds a cure for KV, a virus created to cure cancer in 10009 people. The story starts from the beginning when the virus was injected into people, and in three years time, it has mutated into a deadly virus that some people are immune to on Earth. People who are not killed by the virus become zombies that hunt healthy humans with blood thirst.
I don't understand why people who are infected have to become zombies in any zombie movies. Just like Resident Evil movies. I Am Legend is a movie about a person who will not give up on something even though all the people he loves died.
New York is transformed from a densely populated city into a ruin. I feel sad when I saw the broken Brooklyn Bridge. Wildlife takes over New York city once again, possibly escaped from New York Zoo when people are evacuated and died from the disease.
The doctor's only companion, a dog, is his only friend in the first part of the movie. He erects models with clothes and hats as his friends in a record shop. What are you going to do when the end of the humanity come? He listens to all the CD and watches a lot of DVDs when he has the time. He hunts animals, possibly for studies and food. He also hunts for zombies, with lots of success.
V for Vendetta is about a totalitarian society where people are controlled by a chancellor, and it just gives me the feeling of loneliness when V was with Evie in his lair, similar to how I feel when I watched I Am Legend. I guess people who had seen 28 Days (and the subsequent movie) will have a similar feeling. Was New York a CG? I guess it must be, with all the buildings without people, streets full of cars and grass growing everywhere, it's pretty difficult to have that in the middle of the city. They must have built a huge stage where fake fronts have been put up, too.
I remember watching The War of the World, Armageddon, Deep Impact, Children of Men and also The World After Tomorrow. Apocalypse, by definition, is revelation at the end of age. I Am Legend is definitely about Apocalypse, not in the Christian sense, but in the biological sense.
What will a world be like if there's no people? Less people are driving cars and polluting the planet so theoretically the planet will be a lot greener. It's a lot quieter, like the actress said. Time will not mean anything because we give time a meaning. Animals will roam the streets, and planets will grow whereever they like. Sun will shine, it will rain and days will be dry. Snow will still fall, and storms will come and go. Earth will still be beautiful, just without people.
This movie makes me think about the impact of human activity on Earth. I hope we are wise enough to live here and not destroy everything that we hold dear.
